An investigation by animal welfare volunteers at the Vizhinjam fishing Harbour in Trivandrum, Kerala proved that the local fishermen are still selling marine turtles and there had been more than a hundred catches in the past few weeks/months.We could spot more than 150-200 shells and carcasses of the turtles. On the same day when we went there there were 2 exhibited to be sold at the local market shed just behind a police outpost. We had also visited the marine aquarium run by the govt. where there were aquariumtubs with no plants and withexotic dead fishes. The state of the turtles at the aquarium was the most piteous as there were ket in a tank in the hot sun with water level just upto their noses and no visible food provided. The water was hot and the poor ones would have been suffering much. There were also two small tubs made of plastic/fibre which would hold much heat in which more baby-turtles were there. An animal protected by laws and international treaties including CITES sold right under the noses of policemen.
